Secret Malaysian resettlement plan for dam-affected natives exposed

The tropical rainforests of the Malaysian state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo are one of the world's biodiversity centres. One hectare of forest in Borneo harbours more tree species than the whole of Europe. For centuries, Sarawak's indigenous communities have sustainably used the Borneo forest and its river systems for farming, fishing and hunting.

The current Sarawak government under its extremely corrupt Chief Minster, Abdul Taib Mahmud, is planning to build twelve hydroelectric dams, which would displace tens of thousands of people and flood large tracts of tropical rainforest. The dams would mainly benefit a handful of companies linked to the Taib family, which controls Sarawak's construction sector and holds a state-wide cement monopoly.

On 26th of September, 200 Penan and Kenyah women, men and children put up a blockade on the access road to the 944 MW Murum dam in the interior of Sarawak and the blockade is still in place.

Anarchists entrapped in a conspiracy

Three young men have today pleaded guilty to conspiracy to charges arising from FBI infiltration and targetting of Occupy Cleveland. Douglas L. Wright, 26, of Indianapolis; Brandon L. Baxter, 20, of Lakewood, Ohio; and Connor C. Stevens, 20 have plead to charges of conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, and attempted use of an explosive device to destroy property used in interstate commerce.

The FBI case is based on a paid informant and the procurement of fake explosive devices that were provided to the men. An undercover FBI agent sold the men inoperable detonators and plastic explosives and authorities arrested them on April 30 after determining that they planned to proceed with the attack.

Operation ‘Ardire’ : anarchists locked up!

Operation ‘Ardire’ led to the arrests of several anarchists across Italy in dawn-raids on 13th June. The carabiniers of the Special Operations Group (Raggruppamento Operativo Speciale, ROS) raided about forty homes. Eight people have been jailed. A further two alleged to have been part of a 'terrorist group', Gabriel Pombo da Silva and Marco Camenisch, are already serving jail sentences in Germany and Switzerland and have been incarcerated for many years. The allegation is that Gabriel and Marco were the masterminds, directing militant actions from prison. The whole case involves 24 people which also includes members of the Greek group 'Conspiracy of Cells of Fire'.

It is understood that the allegation is that the arrestees are part of the Informal Anarchist Federation, a group that is alleged to have played a role in letter bombs sent to various embassies in recent years. It also claimed responsibility for shooting Roberto Adinolfi, the chief executive of a company linked to Italian defence conglomerate Finmeccanica, in the knee in May. The people arrested are not facing charges for that shooting.

A big debate is raging in Italian anarchist circles around the actions of the Informal Anarchist Federation, with some claiming that that group is in fact a state fabrication to justify repression against anarchists. However, it appears that at least some quarters are supportive of the actions taken by the Informal Anarchist Federation (which is also active in the UK, Chile and Indonesia).

According to the prosecution, Gabriel Pombo da Silva was able to communicate with people in Italy using a cellphone. The calls were intercepted. He is alleged to have encouraged people by saying: "We will an answer. Bang bang bang, you understand?"

Reclaim The Seas - Piracy Trial in Germany

"The fishermen, when they lose their fish, they think" - A., Somali in Germany

Since 22nd November 2010, a group of ten Somali men have been on trial in the Hamburg Youth Court. They are facing charges of kidnapping and seizing a ship, charges that carry a maximum of 15 years imprisonment. What they are alleged to have done is board a German ship, the 'Taipan', as it sailed 500 miles off the coast of Somalia last April. The group were captured by a Dutch marine commando and taken to Netherlands and from there they were extradited to Germany to stand trial in Hamburg. Hamburg being the city where the ship's owner's multi-national company is registered.

20 lawyers are representing the ten accused and so far 14 trial dates have been set, meaning that the proceedings are set to last until the end of January 2011. The reason the case is being heard in the youth court is that three of the defendants are not yet adults in German law. The youngest is only 13 years old and cannot be tried under German law.

An employee of the burnt bank speaks out on yesterday’s tragic deaths in Athens

Events in Greece are currently very tumultuous. After the general strike and riots all around the country in recent days, capitalism is seriously threatened. Below is an article from the blog Occupied London, one of the best English language websites on what's happening in Greece, on the deaths of three bank workers on the day of the general strike. More articles: Names of the dead announced; bank workers strike today in memory | Protest in front of the parliament comes under attack as austerity package is voted in | Anarchist international call in Greece

Yesterday’s tragic deaths in Athens leave little space for comments – we are all very shocked and deeply saddened by the events. To those (on the “Occupied London” blog even) who speculate that the deaths might have been caused purposefully by anarchists, we can only reply the following: we do not take to the streets, we do not risk our freedom and our lives confronting the greek police in order to kill other people. Anarchists are not murderers, and no brainwashing attempted by Greek PM Papandreou, the national or the international media should convince anyone otherwise.

Activists getting ready for Vancouver 2010 Olympic games

In the shadow of the largest internal security operation in Canadian history, activists prepare to expose the truth about colonial politics.

From February 12-28 2010 Vancouver & Whistler will be host to the 2010 Winter Olympics and local activists are calling for a anti-olympic convergence to dispel the spectacle of the games. Vancouver is located in the province of British Colombia, Canada, on the traditional land of the Coast-Salish indigenous communities. This land was never legally ceded to the colony of British Colombia and no treaty exists between native communities and the government of Canada. This fact hasn't stopped the government from allowing the development of large settlements, such as the city of Vancouver itself with it's population of well over 1 million, nor the huge resource extracting industries that come with it. For this reason Indigenous rights activists are demanding "No Olympics on Stolen Native Land."

In solidarity with the indigenous peoples of Kanata, a protest will take place in Wellington on 13th February 2010, 10am outside the Canadian High Commision (125 The Terrace).

Howard Zinn dies at 87

Portrait of Howard Zinn by Robert Shetterly from his series, Americans Who Tell the Truth.Howard Zinn, the Boston University historian and political activist who was an early opponent of US involvement in Vietnam and a leading faculty critic of BU president John Silber, died of a heart attack today in Santa Monica, Calif, where he was traveling, his family said. He was 87.

"His writings have changed the consciousness of a generation, and helped open new paths to understanding and its crucial meaning for our lives," Noam Chomsky, the left-wing activist and MIT professor, once wrote of Dr. Zinn. "When action has been called for, one could always be confident that he would be on the front lines, an example and trustworthy guide."For Dr. Zinn, activism was a natural extension of the revisionist brand of history he taught. Dr. Zinn's best-known book, "A People's History of the United States" (1980), had for its heroes not the Founding Fathers — many of them slaveholders and deeply attached to the status quo, as Dr. Zinn was quick to point out — but rather the farmers of Shays' Rebellion and the union organizers of the 1930s.
